Cogito, ergo sum

I think, therefore I am.

Descartes' bedrock. After doubting everything that can be doubted — the senses, the body, mathematics, the world — one thing survives. The act of doubting is itself an act of thinking. To think is to exist. Cogito, ergo sum. Modern philosophy starts here, with the lonely thinking self looking for a way back to the world.
