Essence vs. Existence
What a thing is, vs. that it is.
Avicenna's distinction: the essence of a thing (what it would be if it existed) is one question; whether it exists is another. In creatures, essence and existence are separate; existence is added to essence from outside. In God alone, essence is existence. Aquinas builds his entire ontology on this distinction.
