Historical Materialism

Material conditions of production shape consciousness, not the other way around.

Marx's inversion of Hegel. Hegel saw history as the unfolding of Spirit, with material conditions as expressions. Marx says it is the other way around: the economic base (forces and relations of production) determines the superstructure (politics, law, religion, philosophy). To explain a society, follow the labor.
