Methodic Doubt

Doubt everything that can be doubted until you find what cannot.

Descartes' procedure in the Meditations. Treat every belief as suspect until it survives the most extreme doubt — the senses lie, dreams convince, an evil demon could be feeding me illusions. What survives? Only the act of doubting itself. The technique is the ancestor of every philosophical foundationalism that followed.
