Natural Rights

Life, liberty, and property — by nature, not by grant of the state.

Locke argues that individuals have rights prior to any government and that government exists to protect them. If government fails, the people may legitimately overthrow it. Jefferson translates "property" to "the pursuit of happiness" in 1776. The argument is the philosophical bedrock of every modern constitutional democracy.
