Ockham's Razor

When two explanations account for the data, prefer the one with fewer assumptions. The principle is older than Ockham (Aristotle uses something similar) but he wielded it so often it became his. It is the patron saint of every modern science that prefers parsimony — and a useful corrective to philosophical excess in any era.
