Realpolitik

Politics by what works, not by what ought.

Machiavelli's separation of politics from morality. The successful prince acts as the situation demands, not as a moralist would prescribe. The view is not amoral but consequentialist about the public sphere: a moralistic ruler who loses power has failed not only politically but morally, because his successor will be worse.
