The Social Contract

Legitimate society is a contract among equals to live by a common will.

An idea older than Rousseau (Hobbes and Locke each have versions) but most influential in his formulation. Citizens surrender all their natural rights equally to the community, and receive in return civil rights under the general will. The contract is the moral foundation of democratic legitimacy.
